Breast & Cervical Cancer Screening
BCCP WHY WORRY ABOUT CANCER SCREENING?
Each year in Michigan, more than 1500 women die of breast cancer, and 150 women die of cervical cancer. As many as half, to all of these could be prevented by early detection made possible by regular screening tests. The Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program is designed to acquaint women with the need for screening, provide education and information about Breast and Cervical Cancer, and to assist with follow-up.
WHO IS AT RISK FOR BREAST AND CERVICAL CANCER? Ninety percent of breast cancer occurs in women after the age of forty. You could have no risks, or you may be at risk due to certain factors:
- Family history of breast cancer
- First pregnancy after age 30
- No pregnancy history

Cervical Cancer accounts for 6% of all cancers in women. Your risk of cervical cancer increases with certain factors:
- Experiencing sexual intercourse before age 18
- Having more than one sex partner
- Diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease
- Being a smoker
HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOURSELF FROM BREAST AND CERVICAL CANCER?
The best protection is early detection and prompt treatment. Here are four important steps to protect yourself:
- Monthly Self-Breast Exam, performed several days after your menstrual period.
- A Clinical Breast Exam by your medical care provider is recommended every year.
- A Mammogram every year, beginning at age 40.
- A Pap Smear Screening every year.
