H1N1 Vaccine Recalls
There have been 3 non-safety-related recalls since mid-December for some H1N1 (swine flu) vaccine lots due to the potency being less than the manufacturer's specification for the product. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agree there is no safety issue and that the small decrease in vaccine potency is unlikely to result in a significant reduction in immunity.
The 12/15/2009 and 1/29/2010 recalls were for vaccine that was not distributed in the LMAS jurisdiction. Some of the vaccine in the 12/23/2009 recall was distributed to LMAS providers and involved only the nasal spray vaccine. Providers were contacted to stop dispensing and return any of the unused vaccine to the manufacturer.
There are no safety concerns for anyone who received this vaccine, do not need to be re-vaccinated, and no special action is required for individuals who have already received the vaccine.
