Site Evaluations

On Site Sewage Program: Provides requirements for location and construction of individual sewage systems to prevent ground water and surface water contamination.

Septic Waste Haulers:  Program for licensing of individuals who service septic tanks and portable toilets through annual inspection of vehicles and disposal sites.

 

Land Evaluation:  Provides evaluation of vacant land to determine suitability for development.

 

Groundwater Compliance:  Pollution prevention plans, emergency response.

Mortgage Evaluations (Water and Sewage Evaluations):  Evaluation of location and construction of existing water wells and sewage systems and also provides water quality analysis.

Indoor Air Quality:  The LMAS District Health Department, Environmental Health Division has also made available for a nominal fee the following test kits: Radon, Lead, Carbon Monoxide, as well as Formaldehyde.  For more information on these test kits, contact your local health department office.

Soil Erosion & Sedimentation:   (Mackinac County) A Soil Erosion Control Permit is required for Earth-Changes that are located within 500 feet of a Lake or Stream and for earth changes that are one acre (43,560 square feet) or more in surface area, regardless of the location. There are a few types of earth change activities that do not need permits. The exempted activities are beach nourishment projects under Part 325, minor earth changes, normal road and driveway maintenance, changes of less than 225 square feet, plowing/tilling for crop production, mining, and logging. The exemptions listed above do not apply if the activity is a phase of site preparation for another land use activity that requires a permit.

 

Subdivisions-Site Condominiums:  Evaluations of parcels of land proposed to be divided for the purpose of building development with individual water wells and sewage systems.

 

Environmental Complaints:  Investigation of conditions related to environmental health hazards or complaints regarding public health.

          In addition to the above licensing or permitting programs, the Environmental Health staff provides services in communicable disease control, indoor air quality, rabies, hazardous waste disposal, schools, public bathing beaches, marinas, vermin control and disaster planning.
